Restaurant PEI - The Best Restaurants on Prince Edward Island (PEI)

Seafood PEI

Seafood is most likely the most popular restaurant choice on PEI and for good reason. PEI offers a large selection of seafood restaurants, however, Restaurant PEI has narrowed that down to the top 5 on the Island.

1. New Glasgow Lobster Suppers

This restaurant has been serving lobster since 1958. The restaurant has its own lobster pound on the premises. Meals include fresh lobster, rolls, chowder, mussels, salad, desserts and beverages.

Their system of paying before you are seated takes the guesswork out of the process. The dinner was a thunderous bargain for the money.

They were attentive, and sat us at a table of our choosing. The waitress was there in a flash to take our tickets, and the order for our wine. The all you can eat mussels, with the drawn butter were great, and the refills we had made us think we would not eat our lobster, but we did.

The buns baked in a muffin type pan, they were big, light, fluffy and very tasty. The lobster was next. It was hot, juicy and cooked just right. The shell was cracked in the right spots, making a shell cracker unnecessary. Then came the desserts. All you can eat pie and cake. They were homemade and wonderful. We almost rolled out of there with the quantity of quality food we had… Delicious

2. Friendly Fisherman

Offering a cafeteria-style breakfast and lunch with daily specials, their evening buffet features a soup and chowder bar, large selection of seafood and meat dishes, hip-of-beef, roast turkey and baked ham plus desserts and beverage.

This restaurant is really big, about 300 seats inside! The food was pretty good, not a lot of vegetarian selection (other than salads, some noodle pasta, and jello) but there was a variety of different meats and seafoods. The salads (which you put together yourself with the available veggies) and the noodle salad were delicious. There was also an ice cream bar with about 20 different flavors and just about every color of jello known to man.

3. Water Prince Corner Shop

This place is a real find, tucked into an attractive corner building at Water and Prince streets (hence the name) that looks at first glance like a simple newsstand or convenience store. Inside, though, you’ll find one of the city’s most convivial seafood joints, serving lobster dinners, superb seafood chowder, cooked mussels, and even lobster rolls to an appreciative mixture of tourists and locals. There’s a liquor license if you want to tip a few (and you might).

If the weather’s good, try to get a seat on the street near sundown. You can see the waterfront from some tables.

4. Flex Mussels

It’s an all-around excellent restaurant with a serious chef, Garner Quain, who has put together an extensive menu of seafood including clever tweaks of classics. In addition to a straightforward (and superb) lobster roll, Mr. Quain prepares a lobster tempura roll, sauced with a wasabi aioli. A fish-and-chips dish comprises thinly battered and fried salmon in addition to thickly battered and fried cod. As for the chips, Mr. Quain’s French fries are among the finest I’ve eaten. They’re made from Russet Burbank potatoes grown on the island, where potatoes are a major crop.

But mussels take center stage, as mussels options take up an entire page of the restaurant’s menu, because Mr. Quain uses ingredients as diverse as brandy, chipotle peppers, duck and mango to create more than 20 gorgeously wrought broths and sauces with which mussels are served. Over two meals at Flex we sampled four mussel preparations and probably had more than 50 mussels, each impeccable: fleshy, supple, even somewhat sweet. There wasn’t a puny, stringy dud in the lot.

5. Lobster on the Wharf

Lobster on the Wharf serves up all kinds of seafood but as the name suggests, they are mostly known for their lobster. They have got a great location right on the water with 2 outdoor patios to enjoy during the summer. If you don’t feel like eating in the dining room, you can visit their fish market and get some fresh fish to cook at home. We have done both and are always impressed by the quality and freshness of their fish and shellfish. This is a must visit if you’re in the area.
